I haven't been posting lately because I've been feeling kinda depressed. I started a new job last Thursday and I am not liking it.

Its not that this place is full of jerks or that they make me do dishes all day, its more that this job is not what I want. I'm working at a restaurant located at a hotel. This place would be better suited to someone who has better practical skills, where as I think I'm better at the theoretical aspect. My intention is to work with a focus more towards baking and pastry but to finish my Culinary Arts program I need to finish this 5 month work placement.

I think that my instructors have a lot more faith and confidence in my abilities than I do. I've also seen this from a few of the second year students who think that I am one of the strongest people in my class, but I don't really see what they do. When placements were being assigned my instructors had given me a location, however when they got together and discussed it they decided I would be better suited to this location. At the time I didn't realize that they probably thought I was so great and I would do so well at this place, but I don't think that was true. I feel like I hardly know anything about the proper way to do most of this stuff and I am really worried about screwing stuff up and letting people down.

Before I started work I was looking forward to the job and was expecting to enjoy the experience, but after the first day I immediately felt depressed, and it didn't get any better until almost a week later. I ended up with this Saturday and Sunday off and I was hoping I would be able to get out and do something fun. Friday night I asked a few people if they wanted to do something but they all had plans, but I wasn't really worried because I figured I still had Saturday. So today I tried to ask people to do something but out of everyone I tried to contact, all the ones who replied had other plans. So once again, I get to sit alone in my room on a Friday and Saturday night.

BEDA 26

So I didn't really blog the last couple days of April. I still however made it through three weeks. At least when nobody reads a blog they won't complain about not following BEDA.

Yesterday I got up early to get on a bus at 8am to go to an awards ceremony. When I got there I bought candy at a store across the street from the Convention centre. Then my friend Jason, who I almost never get to see asked me to help him out backstage bringing the plaques and such up to the presenters so I got to have something to do.

When I got home I went for a drive around town with my friend Katie M and she told me a story about how she created a fake profile on a dating website and named this character Big Ethel. I hear that Ethel has become quite popular.

On this day in 1970 the first Earth Day was celebrated

Earth Day is now celebrated in 175 Countries

"Don't forget, if you ever need me I'm only a vodka away from you"
Alex Day (Don't Look Back)

Parrot Stories is the debut album from Alex Day (also known as nerimon). The cover features a cartoon parrot with a leather jacket singing into a microphone. The name comes from a quote from "A Streetcar Named Desire" when a character says "Stanley, tell us a joke, tell us a funny story to make us all laugh... I love parrot stories! Do you all like parrot stories?"

The track list is
1) A Thousand Hours
2) Hearts
3) No More
4) Holding On
5) Candy Floss
6) What You Do
7) No Sacrifice
8) Impossible Dreams
9) Sicily
10) How We Were
11) Don't Look Back

Starting out we have A Thousand Hours, which is one of the faster songs, and one of my favorites This song was also covered by Dr. Noise. Next up is Hearts, a duet featuring Lex (tyrannosauruslexxx). It has a nice upbeat feeling to it and it's the kind of song that easily gets stuck in your head.

Third up is No More, which has a sadder feeling to it. It has one of the best lines on the CD with "Don't forget, if you ever need me I'm only a vodka away from you", but the one thing I don't really like is the instrumental section after the line "Sleep under the stars". I initially heard this song as a demo on Youtube and and had gotten used to the way it was played there. Despite this I still think this is a really great song.

Fourth is Holding On which also features Tom Milsom on backing vocals. Despite how cheerful the song might sound, the lyrics are kinda sad, about how the boy is holding on and hoping the girl would feel the same way he does. Next we have Candy Floss (which is called cotton candy in North America) which features ukulele.

After Candy Floss is What You Do. I'm not particularly fond of the the arrangement at the start of the song but right after the chorus when the guitar kicks in I think it helps to balance out the other instruments. The lyrics are great and this is also one of my favorites. Next we jump into No Sacrifice which has a kinda rock feel to it. Followed by Impossible Dreams, another of the more sad feeling songs.

At number ten we have Sicily. I really like the arrangement of this song with the acoustic guitar, accented with the electric with a kind of echo effect. The vocals also add another level of depth to the song. How We Were is next and is possibly my favorite song on the CD. The verses mainly feature bass and vocals with guitar coming in during the pre-chorus and building up to the chorus with the drums joining in.

Next is Don't Look Back which was featured as a demo on DFBTA Records Vol. 1 compilation. The lyrics are poetic and accompanied by ukelele in a slow song.

Last but not least, is by far the best track on the entire album (hidden track on the physical CD). This is the kind of track that makes your whole $12 worth it.

Overall I would rate Parrot Stories at about 4/5. It has a variety of musical styles and is the kind of album you can listen to any time.

On this day in 1989 around 100,000 students gather in Tiananmen Square to commemorate Chinese reform leader Hu Yaobang.

I recently finished Will Grayson Will Grayson, written by John Green and David Levithan. *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

The story is about two individuals both named Will Grayson. Will Grayson lives life with two rules, Don't care too much, and Shut up. His best friend is Tiny Cooper, who Will claims is the worlds largest person who is really, really gay; and the worlds gayest person who is really really large. Tiny is constantly falling in love with another boy every other day and has written a musical based on the story of his life. will grayson, (all lower case) is depressed and in an internet relationship with a boy named Isaac.

One night when will grayson travels to Chicago to meet Isaac, he meets Will Grayson who is using his fake ID in a porn store. From this point on the lives of both Will Grayson and will grayson are changed forever.

This book was one of the best I've read in a long time. The way the narrative switches from Will to will each chapter is like watching a TV show (like Lost) with constant cliffhangers. I also really loved the nerdfighter references. I definitely recommend this book.

Best-friendship

The concept of a best friend is a curious topic. The idea that a certain friend is closer to you than any others. There's also the question of whether or not you are their best friend.

I have had 3 friends that I think could be considered best friends. Each of these friends I grew apart from mainly from going to different schools. On the other hand I also have a group of friends that I would consider my closest friends.

I think one of the problems with the concept of a best friend is when you consider someone your best friend but they don't. You might want to spend time with them while they would prefer to spend time with someone else. Don't take this the wrong way, you can't be upset with someone for wanting to spend time with other groups of friends, but when you start paying more attention to one friend or group of friends and begin to neglect others, it's not going to help friendships.

When someone is part of a close group of friends begins to date someone outside this group, sometimes they might not pay so much attention to their friends. Of course this person is going to want to dedicate a lot of their time to their girlfriend or boyfriend, they still need to think about their other friends and make an effort to spend time with them as well.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you have to make sure you pay attention to your friends in one way or another without neglecting others.

Colin Singleton - An Abundance of Katherines

"An Abundance of Katherines" is the second novel by John Green. AAoK is about Colin Singleton, a child prodigy who has been in 19 relationships with girls who are always named Katherines. After his break-up with K-19 Colin and his friend Hassan decide to take a road trip. When they see a sign on the side of the road advertising the grave of Archduke Franz Ferdinand they take a detour to Gutshot Tennessee.

While in Gutshot Colin attempts to create a formula to predict the outcome of any relationship. Colin is also shown to have a talent for anagramming.

If you like math and general nerdiness then I would recommend this book. It wasn't my favorite book by John Green but its still pretty awesome.

I missed the deadline because I was out for the night but I'll give you some insight into my day

At school I was working in the pastry section alone and I made the orange chocolate marble cake like I did for my project. This time I used butter cream between the layers and only one chocolate dipped orange segment on top.

I spent about an hour hanging around taking pictures of other groups' final projects.

When I got home I got a call and found out that I have a job for the summer. I'm going to be working at the restaurant in one of the hotels.

Tonight my friend messaged me and a group of us went to her house. We ended up going for a drive to a really creepy cemetery.

Once again I am writing late at night before I go to bed. Here's my final project from school

The first course was a salad with mixed greens tossed in a red wine and citrus vinaigrette with goat's cheese, walnuts and mandarin orange segments. I used a ring mold to keep the greens together and keep the orange segments lined up nicely. I also added a disc made of goat cheese covered with chopped walnuts.

The second course was a grilled frenched chicken breast with red pepper purée, brown rice pilaf and sautéed carrots and zucchini.

The third course was an orange chocolate napoleon. I started with an orange chocolate marble cake, whipped cream, orange segments and caramel shards for garnish. I also used a few dots of caramel sauce on the plate, a dusting of powdered sugar and two chocolate covered orange segments for garnish

Recipes

Citrus Vinaigrette
3 tbsp - red wine vinegar
3 tbsp - lemon juice
5 tbsp - olive oil
1 tsp - chopped cilantro
1 clove minced garlic
TT - Salt & Pepper

Red Pepper Puree
Ingredients:

3 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon minced onion
2 large sweet red peppers, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon dried leaf thyme
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup heavy cream
salt, to taste
Preparation:

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan. Add garlic and onion; sauté until tender. Add diced red peppers, tomato paste, and thyme. Cook mixture for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add white wine and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute. Add chicken broth; bring to a boil. Boil until sauce is reduced by almost half. Add heavy cream; simmer until reduced again by about half. Remove from heat; pour into blender container. Pureé until smooth. Season with salt, to taste, and put through a sieve to strain, if desired. Serve with grilled chicken, fish, or pork. Makes about 2 cups of sauce.

Orange Chocolate Marble Cake

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose or cake flour
2-1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup butter or margarine
1-1/2 cups sugar
3 large eggs
1 tsp extract of vanilla
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
2 tbsp orange-flavoured liqueur or concentrated orange juice or freshly squeezed juice
1 tbsp grated orange rind

Method:

1. Sift flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl and set aside.
2. Cream the butter or margarine in another bowl, add sugar gradually and keep creaming till the mixture is soft and fluffy.
3. Add the eggs one at a time, and beat thoroughly after each addition. Then add the vanilla.
4. Now add the flour mix and the milk alternately, starting and ending with the flour, and only stirring to mix. DO NOT BEAT.
5. Divide this batter in half. Add the unsweetened cocoa powder to one half and stir until blended.
6. To the other half, add the orange rind and liqueur/concentrate/fresh juice. Stir until blended.
7. Spoon the batter into an 8" round cake pan that has been greased or lined with silicone paper. Alternate the chocolate and orange batter in the pan. There will be more batter than can be accommodated in one layer, so continue spooning the batter alternately over the first layer, making sure that the orange batter goes over the chocolate batter in the pan.
8. Bake for 45 minutes in a 1800C oven (350 Fahrenheit), or until done. Test with a skewer.
9. Let the cake stand in the pan for a couple of minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and let cool.

I was just lying down trying to go to sleep when I realized I hadn't yet written a blog.

Today was the day for my final project if the year. Me and a classmate had to prepare a three course meal. We made a mandarin and goat cheese salad, followed by chicken with a red pepper sauce, rice pilaf and sauteed vegetables, and finishing with an orange chocolate Napoleon. Generally things went pretty well except for the rice, which took forever to cook which mean or entree was twenty minutes late and we ended up getting the dessert out before our entree. I'll post pictures when I get them off of my camera.

Later on one of the people I tutor finished all of her work so now I only have one person to worry about. I also don't have any other projects/assignments/tests for the rest of the year.

When I got home I checked the mail and my new threadless t-shirts arrived, so now the only parcel I am waiting for is the one from DFTBA. I also finished An Abundance of Katherines by John Green so I should have a review some time in the next week, and then I will start Will Grayson Will Grayson.

Tomorrow I get to work in the bake shop so it should be fun, I'm going to try to get my instructor to show me how to make a rolled in dough like puff pastry or croissants.

I also started watching 2001 A Space Odyssey and A Very Potter Musical. I think i've filled up my quota of needyness for one post.

Until then

Today I had an interview for my work placement. I ended up arriving early and had to wait until about 2:15 (my interview was at 2:00) because the chef wasn't there yet. I think it went well, and they seemed to like me. When they asked if I had any questions I asked about the team atmosphere and they seemed impressed by the question.

Interview tips

-Don't be afraid to ask questions. Questions can show the employer that you are really interested. On the other hand, the wrong questions might make potential employers thing you are unprepared.

-Don't get too personal, employers don't need to know your life story.

-If you are asked about your weaknesses, try to take the negative into a positive. Avoid speaking negatively about yourself as much as possible, but don't say you don't have any weaknesses. Be confident, but not arrogant.

-If the interviewer is taking notes, give them time to write after you finish answering, don't ramble on to fill the empty space.

-Do some research. Find out what job you are applying for, what company you are applying to, and what they are all about, who will be interviewing you, etc.

One of my biggest pet peeves is how people take perfectly good opportunities and ruin them for themselves and others.

What I`m talking about is how some people go on trips either through school or other organizations and decide to ruin it by doing something stupid. This stupid thing might be drinking, drugs, or sex. People might make these choices regardless, but why do they have to do it and risk ruining a good experience. Are these things really worth losing the privilege of taking part in these activities?

I hate how young people think that alcohol is such an important part of social interaction. Is it that people think that they are incapable of enjoying themselves without being intoxicated?

I used to believe that drinking was just stupid, but now I just think that its stupid when people act stupidly about drinking. I think it's pointless when people get so drunk they pass out or get sick, drink and drive, or do anything that common sense tells you not to do.

I never thought I would but I bought myself a pair of plaid shorts.

I missed posting on Friday because I didn't have an internet connection.

So Friday I went on a trip with a bunch of Junior Achievement kids. We had a 5 hour bus trip, when we got to the hotel it was still kinda early so we went bowling. I am known for my lack of ability when it comes to bowling so I chose to just spend my time in the arcade.

When we got back to the hotel I stayed up late making sure kids didn't get drunk or knocked up, then we got up early and went to the university for interviews. On the way home we stopped at the mall where I got the plaid shorts. Then when we were leaving the only kid without a cell phone ended up getting separated from the rest of us so we had to send people to look for him.

Only 9 days of school left until the end of first year, an interview for my work placement on Tuesday, and my final project on Wednesday.

I've been thinking about anonymity on the internet lately.

I've made an effort to keep my online profile separate from my offline life. To do this I have left my last name off of any usernames and public profiles available for my online profile, such as my blog, twitter, YouTube account, etc. I also don't have links posted to these sites available to my IRL friends, such as on my personal Facebook page.

I keep my online presence separate partially because I don't always want my friends and people I see in person to have access to things like my blog. Right now this blog is more for myself than anything. As far as I am aware my blog has only been read once by Alan Lastufka (for my review of Taking Leave), and possibly by songsfrompaul when I @replied him on twitter linking the post about his channel.

A lot people use their full names on places like YouTube and blogs, while others choose to censor their name in some way. They might do this by using their first name only, using a fake last name, or using an initial or part of their last name. Sometimes being internet-famous to some degree and having your last name public can present problems, such as when some fans had called the house of Charlie McDonnell. In other cases it can be beneficial such as the promotion for John Green's books.

Today is the release of Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan, hopefully my copy will ship soon.

Has anybody else noticed that the toys found in Kinder Surprises have gotten kinda crappy lately? I remember when the building the toys was at least as awesome as the chocolate. So far this year I've opened two, the first was a clear plastic animal thing with a die in the middle, and the second was a rubber creature of some sort that you are supposed to bounce off walls. What happened to the good old days when you got to put together a toy yourself.

I find it kind of interesting how religious holidays such as Easter and Christmas have become so commercialized and not based on religion for some people. I am not someone who follows religion but I do acknowledge Easter because my family does, and I get a bag full of chocolate. I don't go to church, I don't fast for lent, I don't make any effort whatsoever to avoid meat on Good Friday. For me the holiday is an extra long weekend (at least as long as I am in school) and a chance to have candy.

During Christmas I think of it very much as a secular holiday, despite its deep religious origins. For me it is a time where I get my closest family members and I exchange gifts and relax and spend some time together.

On a related topic, have you ever noticed that our parents are probably the first people to lie to us? Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, the Great Pumpkin (just kidding). Isn't it funny how our biggest role models are telling us lies from such a young age.

NewTube

My thoughts on the new youtube layout.

My first impression of the new layout on youtube wasn't all that great because I was used to the old layout. Now that I have gotten used to it I think it is time to review it.

At the top they now have the "edit subscription" button which lets you change settings without going to the user page. The section to watch more videos from a user is now located above the video player which isn't all that different to me. I like the ability to auto play your subscriptions rather than going back to the home screen. The like and dislike button provides a simpler way to rate videos rather than using the five star system.

I don't like how you have to click on the Add to button to favorite a video, its just an unnecessary extra step. The comments are a bit messed up with the video responses added in with text comments and highest rated comments up top. It also seems like you can't access your quicklist or queue from the home screen.

Overall the changes aren't all that bad, it just means we have to adapt to the new setup.

Anyway

Doctor Who is the longest running Sci-Fi show in the world.

Yesterday was the premiere of the new season of Dr. Who. So far it looks good to me, Matt Smith brings his own quirkiness to the part. Once again the TARDIS's unreliability gets the Doctor in a little trouble.

The episode was good, but I wouldn't say its one of my favorites. As much as I like David Tennant's performance, I think Smith will do a good job.

Young uses the stones to get back on the ship where he finds Rush. Rush and Chloe end up escaping and everybody makes it back to the ship.

When Rush returns to the ship, he and Young seem to agree to let go of their argument for the sake of the crew, and we find out that Rush and Wray seem to be working together to try and get Young out of command.

And now for something completely different

One of the best parody videos I've ever seen was recently posted on youtube. It was posted by a guy named Travis and even though he might not be the best singer he makes up for it in his absolutely hilarious lyrics.

Blog Every Day in April

I was inspired to do this by Alex Day, who did a video blog version. My plan is to put a fact into each blog and maybe a quote and whatever I can think of at the time.

So coming up in April I'll be watching the premiere of the new season of Doctor Who and the second half of Stargate Universe. I just found out that I'm going to be a chaperone for a Junior Achievement trip, so I go for a 5 hour bus ride, stay up late and make sure a bunch of high school kids don't get drunk or pregnant or dead. But I plan on having fun.

Lost another time

Kris: "my friend's getting married, he's only 21!" Alan: "Is he religious? Religious people are always married by 21 so they can boink."
via AlanDistro's twitter

So I came up with an idea about why the island is underwater in the flashsideways timeline. I think that in the original timeline the bomb always exploded, which somehow stopped the pocket of electromagnetic energy from destroying everything. The original timeline is a closed timeline which doesn't change, what has happened always happened.

On the other hand I think that in the LAX timeline, flight 815 never crashed, the survivors never went back in time and never blew up jughead, therefore the incident was never stopped and somehow the island ended up underwater. The lack of interference from the time travellers would account for some of the differences in the new timeline. Due to the fact that he was not shot and taken to the Others, Ben could have been evacuated from the island before the incident. This also explains why Desmond was not on the island.

My theory is that the jughead bomb could have just blown a hole into the LAX timeline, somehow linking the two. This link could have allowed things to bleed through, like Juliet's mumbling about coffee, and Jack's confusion about his appendectomy.

I had a theory that Sawyer had become a cop rather than a con because Jacob had not touched his as a child (that sounds a little creepy) and therefore had no influence on his future. I checked the timeline on lostpedia and the incident occured the year after James' parents dies, so the encounter with Jacob most likely still happened.

YouTube Channel Review

Today I'm going to talk about Youtube user songsfrompaul.

I first found out about Paul after he did a cover of Dr. Noise's Little soldier on his old channel "Kronksspinachpuffs". Since then he has moved to a new channel where he posts original as well as cover songs. At the time of writing this entry Paul has a little over 600 subscribers, but he definitely deserves some more. His videos primarily consist of music videos however you can find a few more vlog style posts on his old channel. You can also find him on Twitter and Dailybooth.

Some covers include "Can't" by Alan Lastufka and Tom Milsom, "Legends of Archery" and "Pluto vs. Neptune" by Driftless Pony Club, "They" by Tom Milsom and a medley of six Gorillaz songs. Original songs include "Rebirth" which was covered by Dr. Noise, "Feel the Rain", "Morning Hymn" and "Secret". You can also download a free EP called "Take Me Home" which was recorded for the Hometaping project

Paul also participates in a collab channel with Molly Lewis (Sweetafton23), Barry Aldridge, and Bill Martin (DoctorNoise). It is called vlogrelay and it doesn't follow the typical schedule for collab channels where each member is assigned a particular day to post on, instead each person is given 3 days after the previous post to make their response. He was also a part of the "ourmixtape" collab channel with Alan Lastufka, JBDazen, Raven Zoe, and Bill Martin.

Edu-blog

This is my response to Dan Brown's "An open letter to educators"

I think that Dan has some very good points regarding education. He starts off by saying that an education is essential for everyone, which I agree with.

Dan claims that the value of information has been decreasing over the years. As time went on, information became available to more an more people. Initially information was only available to higher classes, and gradually it was available to others. Dan makes the point that "if you could pay for it, information was yours to buy", referring to the University system.

It seems like Dan is looking at institutionalized education as a place to get information, and overlooking the value of understanding the information.

Dan also mentions that information is now free thanks to the internet. However, the internet is not the only place that has been providing us with free information, before the widespread use of the internet, we also had libraries, where you could go and get information.

Next we hear Dan's description of a typical University class. On the first day there are 40 to 200 students in a lecture hall with one professor, who almost never makes an effort to learn names and almost never encourages interaction between students. Next he mentions the textbooks he spends somewhere around $100 per class, but never uses, because he can find better information on the internet. He then goes on to describe his classes as being an hour where a professor would present a powerpoint slideshow, tell everyone a bunch of facts, and when test time came around, evalute students on how many facts they could memorize.

The whole idea of one professor for 40-200 students seems to me like universities are just trying to accomodate as many people as possible, while minimizing costs. Professors don't learn the names of students in large classes of 200 students because its not practical, professors see this group for a couple hours a week for three months and might not have them in their class again, not to mention teaching a few other classes. If you don't make yourself stand out in a lecture hall full of people how can you expect a professor to remember you? When it comes to interaction between students, I think it should really be up to the students to work together. Professors should encourage working together, but not enforce it. Group settings may provide a better learning experience, but some people might just prefer to work alone.

Regarding the textbooks, I do agree that the information might be available to you from other sources; but with the textbook, the professor knows that every student would have access to the same information, and can design their lesson accordingly. Some professors choose to follow the textbook more closely than others, such as assigned readings. Last he describes his classes as a place where professors tell him facts, and later test him on the ability ro remember those facts, failing to acknowledge the understanding gained from the classes. You can know as many facts as you want, but they aren't going to get you very far without the ability to put that knowledge into practical use.

Like Dan, I have also dropped out of University. I was taking a Bachelor of Science, but I realized that it was not what I wanted to do. I then enrolled in Culinary Arts at a Community College.

My experience was somewhat different from the one described by Dan. In my larger classes, the prefessors did not learn names, however I had a class with about 25 people and the professor did learn all of our names. Several of my classes used the textbook frequently, and in one case the textbook had been designed around the course.

My classes did not consist of professors simply telling us facts. Some classes had professors telling us facts, followed by taking these facts and actually using them to solve a problem. Other classes we were told facts, and tested on our understanding of the facts and how they work together.

Despite the fact that I disagree with Dan on a few things, I do agree wih his decision to leave university. In my opinion, one of the biggest problems with the system currently in place is that high school students are expected to attend university or some other type of post secondary immediately after high school. In my particular case I was able get out of university before I had any real debt. People don't always know what they want to do for a career when they graduate from high school, and even if they are prepared in that respect, many aren't prepared for the significant financial costs associated with university. Some people end up with significant amounts of debt fir student loans or other kinds of debt before they make it into the work force. When I left university I was able to get a job for a few months and I had more than enough saved up for my first year of community college. I have a tremendous amount if respect for the people who take a year off from school between high school and university to work and really think about their education.

The university system is not perfect, but to some degree it does work.

travel-blog

I added a few new subscriptions on youtube. First is raywilliamjohnson, who has a show called "=3" where he does a sort of America's funniest home videos show with viral videos. Next is meekakitty who has random nerdy sort of vlog things that are funny. Last is uploadtour which is the channel for a tour of the UK featuring such artists as Alex Day, Tom Milsom, and Eddplant.

Next up is travelling. So far I've gone to Toronto/Niagra Falls for a family trip when I was younger. I've also gone to a few youth leadership type conferences in Newfoundland and New Brunswick. My biggest trip has probably been my class trip to New York two years ago.

On my trip to new York there were 16 of us including chaperones and we stayed in manhattan for four nights. When we were there we took a night time tour, visited the Empire State Building, saw Chicago went shopping on Fifth Avenue and in Chinatown. One of the most fun nights was when a few of us put on the most rediculous clothes we could find and went walking the streets of New York and we stopped at Columbus Square and I took a bunch of crazy pictures.

I definitely want to go back to New York in the future. I would also like to go to England and France. Some friends and I are thinking about going on a class trip after graduation to somewhere like Cuba. I would like to go to vidcon 2010 in LA but it's too much money right now. I also want to to to Leakycon in 2011 but I wish it was in Boston again rather than in Florida just because it would be closer.

I would also really like to just get a couple friends and jump in a car and just drive somewhere. To me travelling to your destination is fun all in itself.

So if anybody does ever read this, feel free to comment about places that you have been to or places that you would like to go.

Lost again

Last night was the third episode of Lost this season.

Island Timeline: Locke trys to get Richard on his team, and apparently Jacob kept him in the dark just like Ben. Locke finds Sawyer and gets him to follow him through the jungle, where he has hallucinations of a blond kid, dressed like one of the Others, who mentions the rules and how the man in black is not allowed to kill Jacob. Sawyer and TMIB get to the shore, climb down a creepy looking ladder, which collapses on the way down and they get to a cave. Inside is a scale with a white and black stone balanced on either side, TMIB takes the white stone and throws it into the ocean, referring to it as an inside joke. The stones seem similar to the black and white stones found on Adam and Eve in the caves. TMIB then goes further into the cave where some of the survivors names are written on the walls and ceiling surrounded by a bunch of other names which have all been crossed out. All the names also have numbers next to them and each of the survivors names has one of "the numbers" next to them (4 8 15 16 23 42). Names included are Locke, Jarrah, Reyes, Kwon, Sheppard, and Ford. TMIB crosses out Locke and mentions that all the names are candidates for the next protector of the island.

Meanwhile Sun, Frank, Ilana, and Ben are ditched when the Others go to the temple and they are about to follow but Sun insists on burying Locke. They head to the 815 survivor's graveyard and bury Locke and Ben says that he's sorry for killing Locke. Ilana also mentions that Locke is no longer able to appear as other people, which might have something to do with killing Jacob.

LAX timeline: Locke gets home from the airport and his wheelchair lift on his van stalls and he falls trying to get down. Helen comes out of the house to help him get up. Later they are discussing wedding plans and Helen mentions inviting Locke's father. Helen also finds Jack's business card that he gave Locke back at LAX. At work Locke is fired for going to Australia on company time for his walkabout (did Abbadon still tell Locke about this even though the island is gone and Widmore is presumably dead?) and in the parking lot he meets Hurley, who rehires him. At his job as a substitute teacher Locke meets Ben Linus who is a European History teacher. Locke also decides not to see Jack after meeting a terminally ill Rose Nadler and having a conversation about accepting life.

If you didn`t notice, in the cave when they show the name Kwon, you can also see the name Mattingly crossed out nearby. Mattingly was the name of one of the Army group that brought the jughead bomb to the island. They also brought back the numbers this episode. In the LAX timeline, familiar characters seem to keep meeting each other, like how Locke has met Rose, Jack, Hurley and Ben. TMIB was also seen using one of Locke`s signature sayings "Don't tell me what I can't do"

Lost ep 2

from Alan Lastufka's twitter

So it seems as though this blog might be turning into a Lost reaction blog

Episode two, "What Kate Does"

LAX timeline

Kate's holding the the taxi driver at gunpoint, with Claire in the back seat. The taxi driver runs away and Kate lets Claire jump out a bit later, but doesn't let her take her bags. Kate gets some guy to cut her handcuffs off and when she looks through Claire's bag she finds baby stuff and she goes back to find Claire. Kate picks her up and drives her to the family that was supposed to adopt Aaron, only to find out that the couple has broken up and can no longer take him. Claire goes into labour and the doctor at the hospital is Ethan Goodspeed (evacuated from the island before the incident). Claire later covers for Kate when the police come looking for her and gives her a credit card.

Island timeline

Dogen tortures Sayid as a test and determines that he has been "infected" (like the French team) and he tries to get Jack to give Sayid a pill. Dogen doesn't tell Jack what's in it, until Jack tries to swallow it, and it turns out that its poison. Dogen tells Jack that Sayid is infected, just like his sister. Meanwhile, Sawyer shoots his way out of the temple and Kate, Jin and two Others follow after him. Kate attacks the others and she goes after Sawyer, Jin eventually leaves on his own, to look for Sun. Kate catches up with Sawyer who tells her that he was going to propose to Juliet. The two Others find Jin and are about to kill him when they randomly get shot by Claire.

So it looks like the Sayid is Jacob theory is out, and we`ve finally found out a little bit about what happened to Claire after she walked off into the Jungle with Christian.

One question I have is, why is it that Juliet, Sawyer, Locke, Dan, Charlotte, Miles, and Jin all got stuck flashing through time. At first it might seem like it was just the 815 survivors and people from the Kahana, but why would it happen to Juliet as well. It wouldn`t be just non-Others that flash through time, because Locke had just joined the Others and he did flash through time. The 815 survivors in the temple (the flight attendant and the kids) also didn`t flash through time. Did the man in black somehow have something to do with who flashed through time? Did Claire experience the time flashes?

So to get away from Lost for a bit, other shows that I follow include:
NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles

The Big Bang Theory
America's Test Kitchen
Stargate Universe
Doctor Who

Lost

So this past tuesday was the season premeire of Lost.

So when we left off last season, Ben had just killed Jacob and Juliett had hit the bomb at the bottom of the hole at the swan site.

When Juliett hit the bomb it sent Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Sayid, Jin, Miles, and herself to the future. It also seems to have created an alternate timeline where the plane lands at LAX.

In the LAX timeline, there are some differences from the original timeline as we know (aside from the whole not crashing thing). As the plane first hits turbulence, Rose reassures Jack, as opposed to the other way around, Shannon is not on the plane, however Desmond is, and when going through customs, Sun is referred to as Ms. Paik and not Kwon.

Just after the plane passes the turbulence, the camera zooms out the window and to the ocean floor where the island is underwater.

According to lostpedia, Shannon's absence is a result of a scheduling issue with Maggie Grace, and probably not a significant detail.

Anything that happened after the incident could have been affected in this alternate time line, providing an explanation for any differences we see in the current time line.

In the Island timeline, the survivors are sent forward in time to about an hour after Jacob is killed by Ben. The Swan looks just like it did after Desmond used the failsafe key, and Juliet is still alive, buried in the wreckage of the hatch. Sawyer manages to dig down and Juliet says something about getting coffee, kisses Sawyer and is about to say somthing important before she dies. Later Sawyer has Miles find out what Juliet was about to say, and he comes up with "It worked". Philip DeFranco mentionned an interesting theory that Juliett had been flashing between realities (similar to Desmond's time travelling after using the failsafe key).

In the jungle, Hurley sees Jacob, and is instructed to bring Sayid to the temple, and to bring the guitar case given to him in LA before the Ajira Flight. The survivors (without Sawyer and Miles) travel to the whole in the wall (where Jin had been with the French Team) and are captured by the others. They are taken in front of Dogen who oreders them killed until Hurley says that Jacob had sent them. Dogen opens the guitar case and finds an Ankh, breaks it in half and finds a piece of paper, which supposedly says that they will be in trouble if Sayid dies. They then take the Sayid to a weird healing spring type thing (fountain of youth?) where the water is brown (which the Others find unusual). They put Sayid in the water face down, and hold him under even when he starts struggling. When they pull him out Dogen says that Sayid is dead. The Others seem to be quite calm despite the fact that Sayid has died. And just before the end credits, Sayid is shown to be alive.

I've seen a theory that Sayid has come back to life as Jacob (similar to the man in black's reincarnation as Locke). This theory goes well with how calm the Others seem to be after Sayid dies. Perhaps the paper in the Ankh told the Others to heal Sayid's body and kill him, to allow Jacob to be reincarnated.

Back at the statue Ben discovers that Locke is not really who he claims to be when he is shown the body of the real Locke. Ben is then forced to lead the way for Bram and his companions into Jacob's chamber, where they are attacked by the smoke monster. The fake Locke then admits that he is the smoke monster. It seems as though the smoke monster/man in black has been impersonating people like Alex and Christian Sheppard.

So it will be interesting to see how the whole alternate reality thing works out.

They

"They say that all is fair in love and war, but this war's not fair and my hearts still sore"
-"They" by Tom Milsom

A guy called Paul (songsfrompaul on youtube) recently released a cover of Tom Milsom's "They" on his channel. Paul slows the song down and gives it a darker tone, and along with the video, the song has a more depressing feel than the live versions available on youtube (which are all that I have heard because I don't have Painfully Mainstream at the time of writing this post). He's taken a great song and made it awesome all over again.

Heres the video

I also suggest you check out the other stuff Paul has out there, including covers of Can't by Alan Lastufka & Tom Milsom, Little Soldier by Dr. Noise and not to mention his original works. In Your Pants

"And honestly this, this wouldn't really even be an issue if John just could you know, keep it... in his pants"
-Maureen Johnson discussing John Green's paternity leave

Maureen Johnson is a writer of young adult fiction and the creator of the "In your pants" joke. The idea behind it is to add the words "in your pants" (or some variation) to the end of a book title, and make it hilarious.

for example

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in your pants

Everybody poops... in your pants

Markus Zusak's "Getting the Girl in your pants"

Everyman in your pants

The Stranger in your pants

Chicken and the Egg

Last night I was out with some friends and the question came up as to which came first, the chicken or the egg.

A few people were saying that the egg couldn't exist without the chicken being there to lay the egg. Someone else said that god put the chicken on earth, and I responded by saying "How do you know that god didn't put the egg on earth."

My argument is: A chicken, by definition comes from an egg, therefore the first chicken must have come from an egg.

Another way to argue that the egg came first is to say that animals reproduced with eggs before chickens existed, therefore eggs came before chickens.

"If you divide by zero, you die"
-my old calculus professor

I just got an app for my iPod that allows me to write to my blog. I also found an app that lets me read my rss feeds through google reader.

Other cool apps include a wifi touchpad that works with my laptop, twiteriffic, facebook, wikipedia and mixology (which lists over 7000 different drinks, not "over 9000"). All of these apps are free or the free version of a paid app.

In other news I just placed an order on DFTBA for Tom Milsom's album Painfully Mainstream and the Oceanic 6 album. I expect they will arrive in about two weeks. In the meantime you can listen to Tom Milsom at YouTube.com/user/hexachordal and you can hear more from DFTBA by listening to the DFTBA radio (not quite an) hour, available free on iTunes.

Best wishes! (1000000 imaginary points to anyone who gets the joke)

The Lottery, a tax on people who are bad at math"

Today I just got back a book I lent to someone about two years ago. Its called jPod and its by Douglas Coupland. It's kind of nerdy, expect a review after I reread it. It also inspired the short lived CBC television series.

Yesterday I dropped an external hard drive and very well might have broken it.

I'm wondering how long it will take for someone to notice my new glasses.

I found an awesome video. Molly (Sweetafton23) did a cover of radiohead's Creep on Banjolele. Watch it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KBiA-7xzOo&feature=sub

"As much as I want it to be, Tetris will never be a good drinking game."
-Kristina Horner

11:11... I just looked at the clock a few minutes ago and saw that it was eleven minutes past eleven, and wondered why people find this significant.

After the year 2002, the next year that is a palindrome will not happen until 2112, at which point I would be 122 years old.

In the past few weeks I have subscribed to several new youtube channels including jpizzle1122 (the microwave show), vlogrelay, fiveawesomegirls, and mynameischrisyeah.

This is a cheesecake I made over the Christmas break. Its an orange flavoured cheesecake with whipped cream and orange segment for garnish.

Music Review - Taking Leave

I will be reviewing the album Taking Leave, a collaboration from youtubers Alan Lastufka and Tom Milsom. Taking Leave was released by DFTBA records in 2009.

Taking Leave is a six track EP of music written by Lastufka and preformed mainly by Milsom with appearances by John Green of Vlogbrothers and wrock artist Kristina Horner.

The album starts with "Just a Boy". The music and lyrics work together to pass along the story of a boy growing up and going through life. It starts out with what might be a glockenspiel, reminicient of a children's xylophone, as the song progresses other instruments begin to take precident. The character begins as a young child, living in his imagination, gradually gettin older and ending up as an old man.

Next up is "The Wind". The lyrics play out a story of a girl who is caught up in her feelings for a boy, using the metaphor of the wind to describe her emotions.

Following this we have "Can't". For those of you who don't already know, the strange clicking is made by a computer printer. The story in Can't is a relationship where the guy is blinded by his love to the girl's pushy and maybe even manipulative characteristics

Fourth is a duet with Kristina Horner, "The Mirror Song" is a slower song mainly played on piano. A retrospective song looking back on how happy they once were, comparing it to a fairytale. The one thing I don't like about the song is how Milsom's and Horner's voices sound slightly off in some parts.

Next we have John Green reciting a Bible verse (Job 5:1-7). Green's voice echoes, giving the impression of a church, joined in with the organ. The last line gives the track its name of "The Sparks Fly Upward". The final note provides a transition to the next song called "Forgiven", which continues the religous themes. The character goes to a church, lighting a candle and kneeling and praying for forgiveness.

This album is awesome, especially when you consider the fact that the contributing artists all live in different area of the US and UK. I would reccomend this CD to those who are looking for something different. To hear the album for yourself you can click
here. I also posted the music video for Can't below (I hope Alan doesn't have a problem with this).

New Years type things

Not so much resolutions but I think this year I would like to set a few goals/challenges.

Blog Every Day in April, I got the idea from Alex Day and Vlog Every Day in April. I challege myself to write a blog entry every day in April.

Get myself my own car, hopefully I can get something for a good price that is reliable.

Get a bunch of people together for something fun

Try Nanowrimo (maybe, if I feel adventurous when November comes around). If I do decide to try, I'll need to have some sort of story planned out beforehand.
